4 Aspect Traffic Light Manufacturer Products

A 4-aspect LED traffic light, also called a multi-phase or full-movement signal head, displays red, yellow, green, and an additional indication (typically a green or red arrow) for protected turn phases. It is the specification for intersections where a straight-through phase and one or more protected turn phases must be controlled from a single pole. Common deployments include 4-leg intersections with dedicated left-turn arrows, T-junctions with high-volume turning movements, and complex interchanges. GAOQIAO supplies 4-aspect LED signal heads in 200 mm, 300 mm, and 400 mm sizes, with the additional indication field-configurable as a green arrow, red arrow, red X, or pedestrian signal depending on the project.

How to Choose the Right 4-Aspect Signal

A 4-aspect head is the right specification when one of the controlled movements requires a dedicated protected phase. Typical scenarios:

  • A 4-leg intersection with a dedicated protected left-turn phase
  • A T-junction with a high-volume right-turn movement requiring its own phase
  • A pedestrian-priority crossing integrated into the same pole as the vehicle signal
  • A bus-priority or bicycle-priority signal sharing a pole with general traffic

Specifiers should not default to 4-aspect for every multi-movement intersection. If the turn phase can be controlled by a separate pole-mounted arrow signal, a 3-aspect head plus a stand-alone arrow signal board is often more cost-effective and easier to maintain. The 4-aspect head is preferred when pole space is limited or when the controller architecture is consolidated.

For projects with dedicated bicycle phases (common in Northern Europe and increasingly in Asia), the 4th position can be configured as a bicycle symbol indication. This requires a custom lens and is quoted per project.

Key Features and Benefits

Configurable 4th Indication

The 4th position is field-replaceable and can be supplied as green arrow, red arrow, red X, pedestrian symbol, or bicycle symbol. This configurability allows the same SKU to serve multiple intersection types across a city's deployment, simplifying inventory management for the buyer.

Multi-Channel Driver Electronics

The 4-aspect head uses a 4-channel constant-current driver with individual channel monitoring. The driver reports back to the controller via the optional diagnostic wire, enabling remote fault detection from the traffic management centre.

Photometric Uniformity Across Indications

All four lens positions use matched LED binning and the same optical geometry, so the perceived brightness of red, yellow, green, and the 4th indication is consistent at all viewing angles. This is a common complaint with low-quality 4-aspect heads where the arrow indication appears dimmer than the circular indications.

Common Applications

  • 4-leg intersections with protected left turns (urban arterial standard)
  • T-junctions with high-volume right turns (commercial district access)
  • Multi-phase roundabouts with approach signal control
  • Bus rapid transit (BRT) intersections with dedicated transit phases
  • Bicycle-priority intersections (Netherlands, Denmark, China Tier-1 cities)
  • Pedestrian-priority midblock crossings integrated with vehicle signals
  • Reversible lane control where the 4th position indicates direction

For a simpler straight-and-turn-intersection, see 3-aspect LED traffic light. For non-turn 2-phase control, see 2-aspect LED traffic light.

Installation and Maintenance

Mount to pole-top bracket. Cable entry is a 5-core cable (4 channel lives + neutral + earth) plus optional diagnostic wire. Configuration of the 4th indication lens must be specified at order time. Installation time is 35–50 minutes per head due to additional wiring.

Maintenance: identical to 3-aspect (12-month visual, 5-year photometric), with the additional 4th-indication channel monitored. Module replacement is field-serviceable. See Installation Guide for full guidance.

Certifications and Compliance

Standard documentation: EN 12368 test report, CE/RoHS/FCC, ISO 9001, photometric data, 3-year warranty. Country-specific certifications (SASO, INMETRO) on project basis. The configurable 4th position requires no additional certification; the head is tested for all standard lens types in the factory.

Why Choose GAOQIAO

GAOQIAO has shipped 4-aspect LED traffic lights to 60+ countries since 2008. Our 12,000 m² Nanjing facility produces 15,000 signal heads per month at peak, with engineering support for project-specific 4th-position configurations. OEM and ODM projects above 100 units are supported. See cooperation cases and company profile for project references.
