Ball, Arrow, and Pedestrian Traffic Signal Configurations: How to Specify Them

1 min read by GQ Traffic

Traffic signal configuration should reflect the movement being controlled. Ball signals, directional arrows, and pedestrian signals may look related, but they require different project inputs and controller sequences.

Ball signals

Ball displays are normally used where the project calls for a standard vehicle movement indication. Confirm the aspect sequence, required colors, diameter, and the number of signal heads for each approach.

Arrow signals

Arrow displays are used when a movement must be distinguished by direction. The RFQ should identify left, right, straight, or other required directions; whether the arrow is a separate aspect; and how it is sequenced by the controller.

Pedestrian signals

Pedestrian equipment should be specified from the approved crossing design. Confirm the visible symbol or message, mounting height, crossing arrangement, controller relationship, and any local accessibility or authority requirements before selecting a product.

Combined layouts

A vehicle signal, turn arrow, pedestrian signal, and countdown display can be part of the same intersection but should not be quoted as a generic set. Provide a phase drawing or signal schedule so the supplier can match the individual heads, brackets, and controller outputs.
