The 16-20 inch (400-500 mm) LED traffic light is the high-visibility specification for expressways, major arterials, and visibility-critical intersections. It is required wherever the approach speed, approach distance, or background visual clutter demands a signal indication larger than the standard 12-inch head. How to Choose the Right 16-20 Inch Signal
The 16-20 inch head is specified by traffic engineer decision rather than by simple application class. Three situations justify the larger size:
- Expressway and high-speed arterial approaches: Where the design speed is 80 km/h or higher, the 12-inch head may not provide sufficient visibility margin at typical approach distances. The 16-20 inch head adds 200+ meters of read distance.
