What “1-aspect” means when specifying a traffic light

A 1-aspect traffic light has one optical face in one housing. That face may show a single indication, such as a red ball, or a purpose-built combination such as a red cross/green arrow, a red/green pedestrian symbol, a bicycle symbol, or a numeric countdown. The important point is not the number of colors inside the module; it is that the project uses one visible signal face at that mounting position.

This compact format is useful when a full red-yellow-green stack would add cost or visual clutter without improving the traffic instruction. It is common at tunnel portals, reversible lanes, toll booths, parking entrances, loading areas and private industrial roads. Before choosing a model, confirm what road users must understand at a glance and how the controller will drive that indication.

Typical 1-aspect signal applications

Five details that should appear on the purchase specification

1. Indication artwork and colors. Send a drawing for arrows, crosses, pedestrians, bicycles or custom symbols. A written description alone can be interpreted differently.
2. Visible diameter. 200 mm, 300 mm and 400 mm are common project sizes, but viewing distance and the governing road standard should decide the final diameter. See our traffic light size selection guide.
3. Electrical input and drive logic. State the supply voltage, AC or DC input, steady or flashing operation, and whether one input or separate color inputs are needed.
4. Housing and mounting. Confirm vertical or horizontal mounting, bracket position, cable entry, visor style and the required housing color.
5. Project documents. Ask for the dimensional drawing, wiring diagram, model-specific test evidence and packing details before approval.

Controller compatibility matters more than the catalog photo

Two modules that look the same can behave differently in the field. A lane-control face may require independent red-cross and green-arrow inputs, while a simple access signal may only need a changeover output. A countdown face may follow red, amber and green signal wires or receive timing data from a compatible controller. Questions buyers ask about 1-aspect traffic lights

Can one face display both red and green?

Yes, a bi-color or multi-color module can place more than one indication in the same face. The wiring and control logic must be specified so incompatible indications cannot appear together.

Is a 1-aspect signal suitable for a public-road intersection?

It can be used for a dedicated arrow, pedestrian, bicycle or countdown indication when the road design and local standard allow it. The approving authority should confirm the signal arrangement.

What information is needed for a custom symbol?

Provide the symbol drawing, face diameter, viewing direction, colors, voltage, control inputs, housing orientation and order quantity. A marked-up front-view drawing is the quickest way to avoid mistakes.

Can the housing be supplied without an LED module?

Some maintenance and assembly projects need housings, visors or brackets separately. Identify the existing housing dimensions and mounting points so the replacement parts can be checked before production.
