A traffic signal countdown timer shows the remaining time in a signal interval. It can help road users understand when a permitted movement or waiting period will change, but the display must follow the controller accurately. A timer that is bright and easy to read is still unsuitable if its synchronization method does not match the intersection logic.

First decide what the countdown represents

Fixed-time intersections are generally easier to support than actuated or adaptive operation. If green time can extend, shorten or skip, confirm how the controller calculates and shares the remaining time. Do not assume a learning timer can predict every variable phase.
Digits, colors and face size
Specify the maximum number that must be displayed. A two-digit face covers a different timing range from a three-digit display and may use a different enclosure. State whether the digits change color with the signal interval or remain one color, and whether the display should blank at any stage.
Face size should follow viewing distance, speed, mounting offset and the project standard. - Nominal voltage, permitted range, AC/DC and frequency.

- Vertical, horizontal, separate or integrated mounting.
- Housing color, visor, bracket, cable entry and service access.
- Outdoor conditions and project-required enclosure performance.
- Required drawings, wiring, test evidence and labeling.
Commission the timer with real operating modes
Bench-test the display and controller together before site installation when possible. Verify normal cycles, plan changes, power interruption, manual operation, flash mode and detector-actuated changes. At the site, observe several complete cycles from the intended viewing position and confirm that the display never contradicts the active signal indication.
If the timer loses timing information, its safe behavior should be agreed in advance. Blanking the display may be more appropriate than showing an incorrect count, depending on the project rules.
Countdown timer RFQ checklist
Send one inquiry line for each display type and include quantity, road-user type, digit count, colors, face size, voltage, synchronization method, controller details, mounting drawing, required documents and destination. If the interface is uncertain, send photographs of the controller nameplate together with the wiring diagram; the nameplate alone is rarely enough.
