How to Choose the Right Traffic Light Pole
Traffic light pole selection starts with the signal head configuration: a single 3-aspect head at a pedestrian crossing needs a different pole class than a full intersection mounting four heads plus a pedestrian head plus preemption equipment.
For most urban intersection applications, a Class II pole with a single arm is sufficient. For dual-arm installations or where the pole carries a secondary load (CCTV camera, preemption sensor, street light bracket), specify Class I. GAOQIAO can re-rate a standard pole to Class I by changing the wall thickness and the foundation bolt pattern, with no change to the external geometry.
Cable routing is often overlooked at the specification stage. The pole must have a sufficient internal diameter to accommodate the signal cable plus any future additions (CCTV, IoT sensors, EV charging control). Our standard traffic light pole has a 90 mm internal diameter at the base, which accepts all standard 12-conductor signal cables plus a 6 mm Cat6 for cameras.
Foundation matching is critical. A pole rated for 45 m/s wind will still fail if the foundation is undersized for the local soil class. We provide soil-class-specific foundation drawings with every pole order, and our engineering team can revise these for unusual soil conditions at no charge.

The 100x300 mm handhole sits at 600 mm above base and includes a pre-wired 12-position terminal block. Signal cable pulls in at the base gland, terminates at the block, and individual conductors run to the head via internal conduit - no exposed wiring, no field termination at the head.
Combination Signal + Street Light Versions
For intersections where the same pole carries both signals and roadway lighting, we offer a combination pole with a 1.5 m street light arm bracket. This eliminates one pole per intersection and is common in European and Middle Eastern urban renewal projects.

Installation and Maintenance
Installation requires a poured concrete foundation (1.5 m to 2.5 m deep depending on soil class), the matched anchor bolt cage, and a crane for lifting. The pre-wired handhole accepts the in-ground signal cable run, the head mounting hardware is supplied with the pole (matched to the order's head specification), and the typical install time is 2-3 hours per pole including foundation. Maintenance is limited to an annual bolt-torque check and the same 5-year galvanization inspection as other pole types.
