Where a 2-aspect traffic light is the right choice

A 2-aspect traffic light is normally used where the instruction has two clear states: stop/go, closed/open, or wait/proceed. The familiar arrangement is a red module above a green module, although red/amber, amber/green and symbol-based combinations are also possible. It is a practical format for temporary one-lane roadworks, parking and factory entrances, bridge approaches, toll lanes, loading bays and selected pedestrian or bicycle installations.

The hardware is simple; the traffic logic is not. For alternating one-lane control, both ends of the controlled section must be interlocked so opposing approaches cannot receive green at the same time. The controller should also provide a clearance period long enough for vehicles to leave the single-lane section before the other direction starts.

Details that prevent ordering errors

• Module order: specify the top and bottom colors or symbols. Never rely only on a generic product image.
• Face size: state the diameter of each optical module and the required overall housing dimensions.
• Power: list the site voltage and frequency, or the DC system voltage for a solar or battery installation.
• Control: explain whether each color has a separate switched input, whether the signal flashes, and what the safe state should be after a fault.
• Installation: provide a pole or wall detail showing bracket position, cable direction and available clearance.
• Environment: identify outdoor exposure, temperature range, salt or industrial corrosion risk, and any special sealing requirement.

Permanent, portable and solar systems need different checks

A permanently wired pair can usually be planned around fixed cable routes and a roadside controller cabinet. A portable roadwork system adds battery runtime, trailer stability, radio link and transport dimensions to the specification. A solar installation needs an energy calculation based on signal power, operating pattern, local solar conditions and the required days of autonomy. A “solar traffic light” description by itself is not enough for reliable sizing.

Do roadwork signals need an amber light?

Requirements vary by road authority and operating method. Some temporary systems use red, amber and green; others use a permitted two-state arrangement. Confirm the required sequence before selecting the signal head.

Can two signals communicate wirelessly?

They can when paired with a compatible wireless controller. The radio range should be assessed at the actual site, including bends, terrain, vehicles and other obstructions rather than relying only on an open-field figure.

Can red and green be mounted horizontally?

Horizontal housings are available, but the order of indications and the mounting orientation must follow the approved project drawing.

What should be included with a sample order?

Request the exact production model, wiring diagram, mounting hardware list and dimensional drawing. The sample should use the same voltage, lens, housing and control method intended for the project.
